Godfrey Phillips is the one of largest player in the Indian cigarette industry with an annual turnover of over Rs 3000 crores (estimated 2010-11). Incorporated in 1936, Godfrey Phillips has two major stakeholders, the K.K. Modi Group and Philip Morris. The Company’s operations primarily span the entire northern and western part of the country with new markets like West Bengal and South of India in its growth plan. 

Headquartered in Delhi, Godfrey Phillips India today boasts of five manufacturing facilities - located in Ghaziabad (near Delhi), Andheri (Mumbai), Rabale (Mumbai), Baramati (Maharashtra) and Bazpur (U.P.), and a  state-of-the-art R&D centre in Mumbai and a tobacco buying unit in Guntur (Andhra Pradesh).

The Company today manufactures some of the most popular cigarette brands in the country like FS1, Four Square, Red and White, Cavanders, Tipper and North Pole. Godfrey Phillips India is known for its innovations. The company has created popular products like Stellar, India’s first slim cigarette and ‘i-gen’ a king-size cigarette, the first in India to conform to EU norms of 10-1-10 in their kitty.

Godfrey Phillips’ passion for delivering a product to suit every consumer segment of the country, and its global mindset drew the company towards an arrangement with Philip Morris for manufacturing and sale of the iconic brand Malboro in India.

As a part of the growth strategy, Godfrey Phillips has also made concerted efforts in their Tea City, leading to Symphony and Super Cup launch with successful results. The Company has also forayed into the highly competitive confectionary segment with Fundamint and Fundagoli. Godfrey Phillips India last year also launched Pan Vilas pan masala, which has been very well received in the market.

Its products are distributed through an extensive India wide network comprising 520 exclusive distributors, over 800,000 retail outlets and the Company has over 12,000 shareholders.

Godfrey Phillips India has also spread its footprint into the international markets. Today, the International Division collaborates with some of the top players in the international tobacco industry to assist them in marketing their products and providing various professional and expert services including contract manufacturing, cut tobacco, smoke analysis and various other consultancy services. Many countries from the Middle East to West Africa, South East Africa, South East Asia, East Europe, Australia, South America and Central America have been added to the portfolio of exporting cigarettes as well as cut tobacco. The International Division is continually making efforts to forge new global contacts to facilitate tea exports. The primary tea brand, Tea City has already made a successful entry into the export market. The International Division also exports Bulk and Specialty Teas to Germany, USA, Japan, UAE, Kazakhstan and Iran.

Over the years, Godfrey Phillips has registered phenomenal growth emerging as a professionally managed, highly efficient corporate entity. Today, the Company has one of the highest productivity rates of workers in the entire country as a result of successfully adopting Quality Management systems like Kaizen Teian, TQM, Haichi-Ban, and 5S and an enviable organizational structure. To enhance business productivity, the company has also undertaken numerous six sigma projects. Continued success and focus on research and innovation also saw the creation of an Innovation Team recently to develop new and innovative products for the domestic and international markets.

The awards and achievements are a proof to the commitment the Company has to process, innovation, quality, environment and employees. Some of the known achievements are Ghaziabad Factory being awarded the ‘Greentech Foundation Gold Award’ in 2009 and 2010 for Outstanding Achievement in Environment Management. The Andheri Factory won the Greentech Safety Silver Award in recognition of excellence in safety management in 2009. Four Square has won the prestigious Golden Peacock Award in 2007 for excellence in Product Innovation category, and Tipper has won the Golden Peacock Award for the best product innovation in the year 2003 and then again in 2006 for innovative product and service. Tipper has also won the Silver medal at the Monde Selection Brussels, World Selection of Quality 2006.

Godfrey Phillips Bravery - a corporate social initiative by Godfrey Phillips India recognizes and awards civilian bravery. Instituted in 1990, the awards have four categories, are held over zone and one national event that include 20 states, the initiative has awarded over 1200 brave. This year, celebrating 20th anniversary, Godfrey Phillips Bravery has now evolved into a movement. From merely awarding and recognizing the brave, the CSR initiative has added Amodini, Women’s Empowerment initiative that believes that financial independence helps women to take control of her life. Over 7000 women benefit each year from the projects that have been undertaken in partnership with renowned non profit organizations.
